This is a step-by-step guide to creating a WhatsApp Message Template. We will see how to add a Header, a Body with variables and Buttons by making an Order Confirmation Message Template.

Step 1: Creating the Template

Go to Marketing Tools โ†’ Message Templates โ†’ Create Template

Header

You can choose among the following options:

  • None

  • Text (In this case, variables can be added)

  • Image

  • Video

  • Document

The Preview on the right will show you how the Header will look in your message.

Body

A WhatsApp template consists of text and placeholders for variables that can be personalized for each customer. The variables are enclosed in curly brackets with numbers inside, as demonstrated below:

"Hi {{1}}, your order for {{2}} costing โ‚น{{3}} has been successfully placed. The expected delivery is in {{4}}."

When using this template, you can customize the message to something like:

"Hi Alex, your order for five meals costing โ‚น30 has been successfully placed. The expected delivery is in 2 days."

While creating a template, you don't have to give values to these variables. You set values for these variables in your broadcast or in the workflow builder.

Next, write down the content of your template, you can add variables anywhere by clicking on the (+ Add Variable) button. Do not worry about specifying what the variable will contain right now, that can be done later while using the template.

Button

Finally, you can add an optional button to your message template by choosing among the following options:

  • None

  • CTA Buttons

    Button Text (Eg- Visit website)

    Website URL (Eg- https://mystorename.com)

  • Quick Replies (Maximum 3 buttons can be added)

Button 1 text (Eg- Confirm Order)

Button 2 text (Eg- Cancel Order)

Submit Template for Approval

For the final step, indicate what you plan to add in those variables for WhatsApp to approve your template. This step is only for template approval, you will be actually setting the variable values later when using the template.

Click on Submit and your template will be approved almost instantaneously.

Conclusion

We learned how to create a WhatsApp Message Template, get it approved instantly and use it. The same steps can be followed for creating a WhatsApp Message Template for all purposes.
