How to Disconnect Your Existing Number and Connect a New One

What you'll need: Access to your WhatsApp Manager and your Spur account. Time: About 10 minutes, plus some waiting.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Step 1: Disconnect the Current Number

Head to your WhatsApp settings on Spur.

Find the phone number in the list. Under the display name, there will be an option to 'View Channel'.

Click on that and on the page that opens right after that, scroll down all the way to the bottom, you'll see a "Disconnect" button highlighted in red.

Use that and then confirm the disconnection. Your old number will now get disconnected from Spur.

It might take longer to disconnect if you have been on Spur for a while and there has been a lot of activity (chats, broadcasts, created templates) that has to now be deleted because you're disconnecting the WhatsApp number.

Step 2: Connect Your New Number to Spur

Go to WhatsApp settings on Spur.

Click on the blue ''Connect New Number'' on the top right.

Follow the instructions here.

You might also need to disable two-factor authentication if the number you want to connect now was being used with another API provider up until now.

Optional: Want the Old Number back on WhatsApp Business App?

Step 1: Head to your WhatsApp Manager. Select the right WABA from the top right drop down. Then find your active phone number in the list of connected numbers. On the far right, there's a little trash bin icon. Click it.

Step 2: Confirm the deletion. Your old number is now disconnected from this WhatsApp Business Account.

Why this matters: If you skip this step and try connecting the number directly, WhatsApp might tell you "try again in an hour." That hour never actually ends. Deleting first avoids the loop.

If you'd like to move the disconnected number to the WhatsApp Business mobile app, just set it up there like normal. Since you deleted it from the Business Account in Step 1 and 2, WhatsApp won't block you anymore.

This is useful if you want to keep using that number somewhere else or hand it off to someone on your team who prefers the app.

That's it. Your new number is connected, and if you wanted the old one elsewhere, it's free to go.
