How to Create a WhatsApp Catalog Without Shopify

You don’t need Shopify—or Spur’s Catalog add-on—to use a catalog on WhatsApp. You can create and maintain a catalog manually in Meta Commerce Manager, then connect it to your WhatsApp number in Spur.

This option works well for businesses with a small catalog, including businesses that want to present eligible services as catalog items.

Before you begin

Make sure:

  • Your WhatsApp number is connected to Spur.

  • You have full control of the Meta Business Portfolio containing the WhatsApp account.

  • You can create and manage catalogs in that portfolio.

  • Each item has a name, description, image, price, and destination link.

  • Your offerings comply with Meta’s Commerce Policies. Meta may reject services or items that aren’t eligible for its commerce surfaces.

Step 1: Create a catalog in Meta

  1. Select the correct Meta Business Portfolio.

  2. Click Add catalog or Create a catalog.

  3. Choose E-commerce as the catalog type.

  4. Choose to upload product information manually.

  5. Enter a recognizable catalog name.

  6. Ensure the catalog is owned by the same Business Portfolio as your WhatsApp Business Account.

  7. Finish creating the catalog.

Meta occasionally changes these labels, but the catalog should always be created inside the correct Business Portfolio.

Step 2: Add your services

  1. Open the catalog in Commerce Manager.

  2. Go to Items.

  3. Click Add items.

  4. Select the manual entry option.

  5. Add each service as a separate item.

For example:

  • Name: 60-minute consultation

  • Description: One-to-one consultation covering requirements, recommendations, and next steps.

  • Price: ₹2,000

  • Image: A clear image representing the service

  • Website link: Your booking, enquiry, or payment page

  • Availability: In stock or available

Repeat these steps for every service you want customers to see.

Avoid using misleading stock, pricing, or product information simply to make a service fit the catalog format. Meta reviews catalog items and may reject anything that does not meet its policies.

Step 3: Give the required access

In Meta Business Settings, confirm that the person connecting the catalog has full control of:

  • The Business Portfolio

  • The catalog

  • The WhatsApp Business Account

The catalog and WhatsApp account should be accessible within the same Business Portfolio. A catalog already linked to another WhatsApp Business Account may need to be disconnected there first.

Step 4: Connect the catalog to Spur

  1. Log in to Spur.

  2. Open Settings → WhatsApp.

  3. Select the connected WhatsApp number.

  4. Find the Catalog section.

  5. Click Connect Catalog.

  6. Sign in to Facebook and approve the requested permissions.

  7. Select the catalog you created.

  8. Complete the connection.

See WhatsApp Settings in Spur for more information.

Step 5: Test the catalog

After Meta finishes reviewing the items:

  1. Open a chat with the business from another WhatsApp number.

  2. Open the business’s catalog.

  3. Confirm that the services, images, descriptions, prices, and links appear correctly.

  4. Send a catalog item or cart to the business.

  5. Confirm that the message reaches the Spur inbox.

Meta may take some time to review new items or reflect catalog changes.

What isn’t included without the Catalog add-on?

This catalog is managed manually in Meta. Spur will not automatically:

  • Create or update its items

  • Synchronize prices or availability

  • Manage item-review errors

  • Create bookings or collect payments

  • Generate a Shopify checkout

Customers should complete the next step through the booking, payment, or enquiry link supplied by the business, or continue the conversation with an agent.

If the business has many items or changes them frequently, the Spur Catalog add-on will usually be easier to maintain.
