How to Disable WhatsApp Link Click Tracking to Show Your Brand's URL in Previews

Updated yesterday

Recently, WhatsApp updated its Business API to automatically generate a preview for any link sent in a template message. While great for users, this can cause confusion if you use click tracking, as it will display the tracking URL (e.g., api.spurnow.com) instead of your website's URL.

This guide will show you how to disable click tracking for specific templates to ensure your brand's domain is displayed, which can improve customer trust and increase click-through rates.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Navigate to Message Templates:

    • From your Spur dashboard, go to Marketing Tools -> Message Templates.

  2. Locate and Open the Template:

    • Use the search bar to find the template you wish to modify.

    • Click on the template to open the editor.

  3. Duplicate the Template:

    • To preserve your original template, click the Duplicate icon at the top of the editor. A new, editable copy of your template will be created.

  4. Disable Click Tracking:

    • Scroll down to the Buttons section.

    • Find the button that contains your link.

    • Toggle the switch for Enable Click Tracking to the "off" position.

    • A new field will appear. Paste the full destination URL (e.g., https://www.yourwebsite.com/products) into this field.

  5. Submit the Template for Review:

    • Once you have disabled tracking and added your URL, scroll up and click Submit for Review.

    • Templates are typically approved within a minute if your account is verified and in good standing.

For Shopify & WooCommerce Users (Important):

Disabling click tracking requires a change in how you attribute revenue.

  • Because the platform can no longer track a "click," you must change your attribution model to be based on when a message is opened or delivered.

  • Go to Settings -> Revenue Attribution.

  • Change your Attribution type from Click Based to Open Based or Delivery Based.

  • Click Save Preferences.

  • If you do not complete this step, revenue from campaigns using these templates will not be tracked.

Summary of Changes:

  • Pros:

    • Increases customer trust by showing your actual website URL.

    • Can lead to higher click-through rates and conversions.

  • Cons:

    • You will no longer see "Clicked" events in the chat for that specific template.

    • The URL is static; to change the link, you must create and submit a new template.
