Meta Restricts WhatsApp Marketing to U.S. Numbers

Effective April 1, 2025, Meta is restricting the ability to send WhatsApp marketing messages to phone numbers with the U.S. country code (+1). This enforcement applies across all platforms using WhatsApp Business APIs, including tools like Spur.

What’s Changing:

  • Marketing Messages Blocked: Any promotional, broadcast, or template message categorized as marketing will no longer be delivered to U.S. numbers.

  • Transactional & Support Messages Allowed: Non-marketing use cases such as order confirmations, alerts, and customer service chats remain unaffected.

  • Applies to All Senders: Regardless of the business location, if the recipient has a U.S. number, marketing messages will be blocked.

Why This Matters:

Meta aims to reduce spam-like messaging and create a more user-friendly experience in the U.S., where WhatsApp usage is accelerating past 100 million monthly active users.

For Spur Users:

  • Compliance Is Automatic: Spur’s systems will prevent marketing templates from being sent to +1 numbers after April 1, 2025.

  • Support Continues Seamlessly: AI Agents can continue engaging in support conversations with U.S. customers via WhatsApp.

  • Marketing Alternatives: Spur supports fallback channels such as Instagram messaging, ideal for U.S. promotional outreach.
