Broadcasting Messages Excluding Specific Countries

Learn how to set up WhatsApp broadcast segments to exclude recipients from a specific country in just a few simple steps.

Updated this week

When you want to send a WhatsApp broadcast to all subscribers except those in a particular country, you can achieve this by creating two audience segments: one that captures all WhatsApp subscribers, and another that captures subscribers from the country you wish to exclude. By using these segments together, you ensure your message reaches everyone outside the excluded region without needing to manually filter numbers each time.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Create a Segment for All WhatsApp Subscribers

  1. Navigate to Segments in the Spur dashboard.

  2. Click Create New Segment and name it something like “All WhatsApp Subscribers.”

  3. Set the filter:

    • Customer Info

      • Field: WhatsApp Subscriber

      • Condition: Is

      • Value: True

  4. Save the segment.
This will include every customer who has opted into WhatsApp messages.

2. Create a Segment for Customers in the Country to Exclude

  1. Again, go to Segments and click Create New Segment.

  2. Name this segment “X Country Customers” (e.g., “Exclude: India”).

  3. Set the filter:

    • Customer Info

      • Field: Phone Number

      • Condition: Starts With

      • Value: <Country Code> (e.g., “91” for India)

  4. Save the segment.

3. Set Up the Broadcast

  1. Go to Broadcasts > Create Broadcast.

  2. Choose the message template or draft your broadcast content.

  3. In the "Send To" section, select the segment “All WhatsApp Subscribers.”

  4. Next, click "Don't Sent To" section, choose the segment “X Country Customers”

    • This ensures that customers whose phone numbers start with the specified country code will be omitted.

  5. Review your message and recipient counts, Spur will show how many will receive the broadcast after exclusion.

  6. Click Send Now (or schedule for later).
