Click to WhatsApp ads let people start conversations with your business directly from Facebook and Instagram ads. This guide covers setting up both the Spur automation flow and the Meta ad campaign.
Part 1: Setting Up the Spur Flow
Step 1: Create a New WhatsApp Flow
Go to Spur, then Automations > Create new flow. Select WhatsApp as your channel.
Choose Start from scratch to build a custom flow.
Step 2: Add the Click to WhatsApp Trigger
In the workflow builder, click Click to add a trigger in the starting trigger box.
From the left menu, select Click to WhatsApp Ad Received as your trigger type.
Step 3: Configure Which Ads Trigger the Flow
Choose Specific ads (most common option).
Select your Meta business account and ad account.
Click Select Ads and choose which ads should trigger this workflow.
Step 4: Design Your Customer Journey
After the trigger, build your conversation flow using message blocks. Here's a sample flow structure:
First Message:
Ask a qualifying question
Example: "Are you looking to buy a refrigerator?"
Provide only "Yes" as an option (people who aren't interested simply won't respond)
Second Message:
Get budget information
"What is your budget?"
Options: "10k-20k", "20k-50k"
Follow-up Messages:
Based on their responses
For lower budget: "We'll reach out to you shortly"
For qualified leads: "Thank you! Someone from our team will be in touch shortly to show you options" and then assign their ticket to someone on your team to close the deal quickly.
Step 5: Add Conversion Tracking Actions
For qualified leads (those with adequate budget), add an action block:
Click + Action
Select Send Meta Conversion API Event
Choose your Meta business account
This tells Meta what kind of customers you want more of, improving your ad targeting.
Step 6: Add Lead Management Actions
For high value prospects, you can also:
Add tags like "hot lead" or "high value customer"
Assign tickets to specific agents for quick follow-up
Set custom fields to store budget or preferences
Part 2: Creating the Meta Ad Campaign
Step 1: Start Campaign Creation
Open Meta Ads Manager and click Create new campaign.
Step 2: Choose Campaign Objective
Select Engagement as your campaign objective (this enables messaging options).
Click Continue.
Step 3: Set Campaign Setup
Choose Manual engagement campaign for better control over your settings.
Give your campaign a name and click Next.
Step 4: Configure Ad Set
Conversion Location: Select Message destinations
Message Destination: Choose WhatsApp only
WhatsApp Number: Select your Spur-connected WhatsApp number
Set your budget and performance goals as needed.
Click Next.
Step 5: Create Your Ad and Write A Copy For The Starter Message
1. Creative: Upload an image or video that catches attention
2. Text: Write compelling ad copy
Step 6: Configure Tracking
Go to Tracking and select Offline events.
Make sure the Spur pixel is selected for tracking.
Turn OFF website events and app events (leave only offline events checked).
Step 7: Publish Your Campaign
Review all settings and click Publish to launch your CTWA campaign.
Best Practices
For Your Spur Flow
Keep questions simple with clear yes/no or multiple choice options
Only ask essential qualifying questions to reduce drop-off
Set up proper lead scoring with tags and assignments
Use conversion tracking for budget-qualified leads
For Your Meta Ads
Use eye-catching visuals that relate to your product
Write clear, benefit-focused ad copy
Test different creative formats (image vs video)
Monitor performance and adjust targeting based on results
Lead Management
Respond quickly to high-value leads (within a few hours)
Use the tags and assignments from your flow to prioritize follow-ups
Track which ads generate the best quality leads
Regularly review and optimize both your Spur flow and ad creative
Troubleshooting
Flow not triggering: Check that your Meta business account and ad account selections match between Spur and Meta
Low response rates: Simplify your first question or improve your ad creative
Poor lead quality: Adjust your qualifying questions or add more screening steps
Conversion tracking issues: Verify the Spur pixel is properly configured in Meta's tracking settings
By following this setup, your CTWA ads will automatically funnel interested prospects into your Spur system where they can be qualified, tagged, and assigned to your sales team for follow-up.
