WhatsApp's 2025 Image Update: What Changed and Why It Matters

WhatsApp changed how images work in templates and broadcasts. If you havent updated your design approach yet, your messages are probably underperforming.

What This Guide Covers

WhatsApp recently changed how images work in templates and broadcasts. When someone taps on your header image, they're now taken directly to your link—instead of opening the image to view it full-screen.

This creates both an opportunity and a challenge:

Opportunity: Your image becomes a clickable element that drives traffic

⚠️ Challenge: People can no longer zoom in to read small text on images

This guide shows you how to design images that maximize engagement, improve delivery rates, and convert better, with real examples from brands like Blinkit.

What Changed with WhatsApp Images

Old Behavior (Before the Update)

When someone received a message with a header image:

  • Tapping the image opened it maximized

  • They could zoom in to read text

  • To click your link, they had to tap the button below

New Behavior (Current)

When someone receives a message with a header image:

  • Tapping the image opens your link immediately

  • They can't zoom in to read small text anymore

  • The image acts as a second clickable element (in addition to your button)

What this means for you:

Your image is now a conversion tool, not just decoration. But if your image has small text, people can't read it anymore.

Most Likely Effect: Higher Click-Through Rates

With two clickable elements (image + button), you have more chances to get people to your website or landing page.

Before: Only the button was clickable

After: Both the image AND the button are clickable

Result: Brands are seeing inflated click-through rates (in a good way) since accidental taps on the image will lead the customer to the link and some percentage of them might be intrigued enough to buy
