Going on holiday? This is how you setup an away message in Spur
Going on holiday? This is how you setup an away message in Spur
Updated over a month ago

When Going Away

The first step is to identify the weekdays you will be away.

In our case, we were going to be away from 30th October to 5th November 2024.

Therefore, the days we will be away for are Wednesday to Tuesday.

Next, we will open Spur and go to Settings > Working Hours

Here, we will deselect all the days we will be away for.

Important: Make sure to do this on your last working day. Otherwise, you might mistakenly select any weekday you are still working on.

For example, if you deselect Tuesday on Monday, all Tuesdays from that point forward will be marked as non-working.

Now we will setup a message for people who message you during the days you'll be away.

For this, we will go to Automations > Basic Automations.

There, we will find WhatsApp Default Reply and IG/FB Default Reply.

Depending on the channels you wish to send the away message on, click on the edit button in front of the default reply of the particular channel. If you wish to make changes to both channels, simply repeat the steps for that channel.

For our example, we will select the WhatsApp Default Reply to set an away message for WhatsApp.

Now, the Default Reply flow might look different for you depending on what edits have been made to it in the past. We will therefore work with a blank flow, but you might already have some of the blocks we are adding.

A blank Default Reply should look like this:

Zoom out a bit and then click on the blue + button on the right to add a new step.

A modal for selecting the step you want to add will open. Select "Check Working Hours" in the Logic section.

A Check Working Hours block will now be added to the automation. Connect it with the starting trigger.

Next, we will create a message for when we are and aren't working.

For this, we will add a send message step. Simply click on the blue + button on the right and then select WhatsApp (or Instagram/Facebook if you're setting up a reply for that channel) under the content heading.

A "Send Message" step will be added to your automation. Connect it with the False node of the Check Working Hours step.

Now, we will write the message we want to send to people when we are away by clicking the Send Message step. Once you click on it, the message pane will open on the left. Click on "+ Send Message" on that pane and choose "Text".

In the text, window that opens, type your away message.

Now, you can also write a message for when you are back.

To do this, simply create another Send Message step and add the message for when you are back. But this time, connect it with the True node of the Check Working Hours block instead of the False one.

After adding this message, your flow should look like this:

Lastly, it's wise to create a ticket for all the people who message you so that you can reply to them once you are back. To do this, click on the blue + button and select Action under the Logic section.

An "Action" step will be added to your automation. We will open a ticket now by clicking on the step, which will open the step configuration pane on the left. Click on the "+ Action" button there and select "Open Ticket"

Now, you can select a person or a team to assign this ticket to, but in our case, we will leave it as default.

Finally, just connect both the messages to this action step.

Your final flow should look something like this:

And that's it!

Now people will get an away message when you are away.

When Returning

Once you are back from your holiday (hope you had a great time btw) simply go to Settings > Working Hours again and enable the days and configure the hours you are available.

Note: People will still get the away message when you are not working, so you might want to change the text of the messages that are sent in the default reply.
